Is High Normal Blood Pressure A Cause For Concern?
You might be having high normal blood pressure
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.
1. Blood pressure is the pressure exerted by the flowing blood on the walls of the vessels.
2. By definition, high blood pressure is a blood pressure over 140/ 90 mm Hg and this should be after 30 minutes of physical and mental rest. Recording blood pressure after doing physical work or having mental stress will show higher reading.
3. If your blood pressure is 133/ 91 then there is no serious concern. It can still be considered normal high or prehypertension. It is suggested that you please record the blood pressure for 3 subsequent days at the same time when you are relaxed and following at least 30 minutes rest. If the blood pressure recording is persistently above 140/ 90 mm Hg then it is to be considered mild hypertension.
4. A point to note is that the electronic blood pressure monitors might show an error of 5 percent. Therefore slight variation of 5 to 10 units is acceptable.
5. For being over weight, it is suggested that you consult a doctor and get your cholesterol tests done to know any risk of cardiovascular disease. The blood pressure is not a serious concern right now. However, if your blood pressure is persistently in the prehypertension range 120 to 139 mm Hg then it is suggested that you discuss it with your doctor. This is not a bad condition for the blood pressure but might help you better with understanding your condition and reducing health risk for development of high blood pressure. Even if the blood pressure is showing borderline values then it might be controlled with lifestyle and diet changes which you are doing right now.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
Dr.Vivek
