Is Cataract Surgery Advisable After Retinal Detachment Surgery?
Question: i had surgery on my eye for a retinal detachment about 6 years ago and have developed a cataract in that same eye-My eye doctor at NYU Langone suggests to get astronger pair of glasses and not to do any kind of invasive procedure-Had buckle and cryo done on retina

Considering you have already had Scleral buckling done for the retinal detachment, any intervention again especially cataract surgery will make you prone to retinal detachment again.
The risk of Retinal detachment after cataract surgery among those with normal eyes is about five per 100,000. You have a much higher risk as you have already gone through that ordeal.
The cataract needs to be monitored for causing glaucoma, dislocation into vitreous or anterior chamber or incarceration into pupil. If there is refractive error due to the cataract spectacles should be worn for its correction.
The extent of cataract should also be assessed , in patients having small central cataract mydriatics for pupillary dilatation may improve vision.
You may consult a vitreo retinal surgeon for a second opinion about the risk of retinal detachment if one goes for cataract surgery.
