Is A Skin Rash Post Intake Of Amoxycillin A Symptom Of HIV?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 May 2016
Question: Hi,

I have recently had a health scare. I have had a rash 7 days after taking Amoxycillin. I visited my GP and he said that the rash was down to an allergy to the antibiotic. However when I researched the rash online it also brought up HIV?! I'm horrified, I have never been tested for any STD's, I have a partner of 6 years and a 14 month old child, of which both confirmed at birth HIV negative? I understand it is possible for one partner to be positive and one negative?
Is this correct?

Brief Answer:
The best way to confirm is to get tested for HIV

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

Welcome to HCM. I have throughly reviewed your query and being your physician will try to solve it.

You had skin rash after 7 days of taking amoxicillin than the possibility of allergic reaction is much more likely and what your GP had said is very true.

You are following monogamous relationship with your wife and not involved with any unsafe sexual practices so the risk of HIV and other STDs is not there. The best way to confirm and alleviate your anxiety is to get tested for HIV.

It is possible that one partner is positive and other is negative but such possibility is very less likely in your case so don't get scared and go for testing at the earliest which will clear all your doubts. For any further query you can get back to me any time.

Thank You

Dr,

I will get a test as soon as possible. Are there any differences in the rashes, HIV and Amoxycillin rash?
Would I expect any other issues as well as the rash if I were infected?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Skin rash is not the major symptom of HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

The major and alarming symptoms of HIV include continuous fever for more than one month, chronic diarrhea for more than one month, chronic cough, unexpected weight loss etc. Skin rash is not major symptom of HIV so don't get worried. Be relaxed and go for the test to confirm your status.

Dr Jangid,

Thank you for your reply. That does actually reasure me much more now you point out the more alarming symptoms. I haven't had any of those. I was more thinking of my past when I was younger. That's what I guess was worrying me.

Many thanks.
