Is A Persistent Fever Symptomatic Of Dengue As Per The Attached Reports?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Nov 2017
Question: Hello Doctor. My name is Vidhya, 26 years old. I've just had fever for the past two to three days which now subsided after taking medicines prescribed by my GP. Still he asked me to take a basic cbc and dengue test (since it is prevalent in XXXXXXX right now). I did that and I've attached the report for your perusal. In that, the dengue Igg is 43.5 positive. My doc said that it could be past infection. But I never remember having one like dengue before. I'm worried about the count because according to biological reference, it is mentioned that it should be below 22. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Earlier infection. Not a cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Let me mention that dengue is a type of viral infection. In the past you could have had a fever and the fact that it was dengue could have gone undetected. This could have led to the IgG positivity. You need not be alarmed about dengue. It is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes and so you need to use mosquito nets and prevent development of breeding ground for mosquitoes. The primary concern about dengue is because a very small percentage of the affected individuals may develop dengue shock syndrome (DSS) where fluid moves out of the blood vessels and unless that fluid is replaced (by drinking plenty of ORS, water or through IV fluids) vascular collapse and therefore shock may result. But even in case of DSS all that needs to be done is to ensure a good hydration, nothing more. So, you need not panic about dengue. Just make sure to drink plenty of fluids.

The platelet count is adequate in any case. So, there is hardly anything to worry, especially if you can ensure proper hydration. In such a case I do not think you need a hospital admission. If case you find any sort of bleeding manifestations, rush to the hospital without delay (I say this although I do not expect such a thing to happen).

Please be patient. Feel free to ask me back if you have any further queries.

Regards
