Is Sensival The Same As Amitriptyline?

Posted on Mon, 18 Jul 2016
Question: My doctor has prescribed sensual 25 mg mor/eve along with amitryn 50 in the night, quitiapine 200 in the night and sulpitac 200 in the morning. I go to bed at 11 pm everyday and wake up two three times before finally waking up at 5 am, don't get restful sleep and feel groggy in the morning. Sensual is helping me with anxiety and panic attacks. I have following doubts :
Can I take 50 mg sensual in the morning instead of taking 25 mor/eve so that if at all it is disturbing my sleep it can be helpful to take it in the morning...

Sorry it's sensival and not sensual. Also wanted to check whether taking sensival 50mg in the morning will have same effect as taking 25 mg mor/eve...

Brief Answer:
No risk in taking in morning.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again, thanks for asking from HCM

Sensival is Nortriptyline and belongs to same group of anti depressants as Amitriptyline. The drug has similar actions as Amitriptyline but the efficacy is different. Amitriptyline is used in patients of insomnia for sleep drug which doesn't cause dependence. Nortriptyline also causes sedation and some times used for sleep. So in my opinion the drug is not resulting in sleep disturbance you are having. But taking both these drugs together might be resulting in disturbed sleep architecture and thus you are having problems.

There is no problem in taking 50 mg dose in morning but this might cause sleepiness in daytime so remain cautious for that. Otherwise there is no risk in taking 50 mg dose in morning and this would control your anxiety. No need to worry.

Thanks.

Dear doc - I have been getting trembling of my hands and tongue ( losing control on words and twisting of the tongue) between amitryn and sensival, which one causes this? Do you think reducing amitryn to 25 from 50 is an option? Do you think taking inderal la 40 will help with these symptoms? What would your advise be? Spoke to the assistant of my doctor, she said wait till Wednesday and call back if it does not improve. Pls help
Was thinking of making sensival 50 from 25 in the night and reduce amitryn to 25, morning dosage 25 of sensival continues, will this change help?

Brief Answer:
Reducing the dose of Nortriptyline should help

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Both drugs are TCA drugs and can cause anticholinergic side effects like slurred voice or losing control of words. In my opinion you can try to reduce the dose of Nortriptyline to 25 mg and if symptoms persist then the drug can be stopped completely. This will help in controlling the symptoms.

Taking Propranolol would not cause much change in these symptoms.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Reduce the dose of Sensival.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

In my opinion its better to reduce Sensival to 25 and then stop completely. Continue to take Amitriptyline. This would help in better symptoms control. No need to worry.

Thanks.

Is taking pacitane an option?

The net says sensival has lesser side effects as compared to amitryn, therfore, was wondering whether I should reduce amitryn...

Brief Answer:
Amitriptyline is better

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking again.

No taking Pacitane would not help much because these are not EPS and the drug will increase some side effects too.

A lot of internet reviews are biased by pharmaceutical reviews. Amitriptyline has better efficacy though to some extent the side effects are more. But the drug help in better symptoms control. If we consider efficacy, side effects benefit then better to continue with Amitriptyline. Nortriptyline is preferably used in neuropathic pain conditions than Amitriptyline. In psychiatric issues Amitriptyline is better.

Thanks.
