Brief Answer:
Pantoprazole can be taken.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
As you know both omeprazole and pantoprazole belong to the same group of medications called proton pump inhibitors. Some other PPIs include lansoprazole, esomeprazole and rabeprazole.

All these interact with citalopram. But the degree of interaction is high with omeprazole and esomeprazole and a 50% dose reduction of citalopram is required if omeprazole or esomeprazole are taken with it.

But there is no need to reduce the dose of citalopram if taken with pantoprazole.
But always discuss with your doctor before taking any medication.

I hope that answers your query.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Dr.R.K.

sorry that was meant tobe 20mg of Pantoprazole.

Thanks you for your answer.

What are the danger of taking omeprazole or esomeprazole? And are those dangers long lasting or just a danger whilst combining the 2 drugs?

Thanks again!

Brief Answer:
Side effects of citalopram

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Omeprazole and esomeprazole use the same enzyme system for metabolism.
So any of these two is taken with citalopram, metabolism of citalopram is affected resulting in its increased levels in the body. This causes adverse effects like abnormality in the heart rhythm , vomiting , tremors, sleep disturbance etc.. These will last till the drug is metabolized.

I hope that answers your query.

Thanks again...

One last question - Would the increased levels of the citalopram also effect the liver or doesn't that really come into it.

Once again, thanks you for your thorough answers!
