Is HbA1c Level Of 5.4% A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Sat, 17 Jun 2017
Question: Yesterday evening, I checked my glucose before eating dinner. It was showing 131. After I ate, my glucose was 255. Am I turning into a diabetic or is the current medication I am on for my current sinus infection and steroid pak for my body inflamation affecting my glucose levels? I took my glucose two more times and it is slowly going down.

Brief Answer:
about glucorticoid induced Diabetes;

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
HbA1c level 5.4 % suggests that you have not had Diabetes during the previous 3 months.
Of course, Methylprednisolone you are taking actually has caused the rapid raise in blood sugar.
After stopping it, the glucose levels will get back to normal ranges.
In rare cases the Diabetes caused by glucocorticoids persists after the therapy.
I suppose you are not going to take them for a long time ( just for several days).
So, keep monitoring the blood glucose after stopping the therapy and if the glycemia persists high, you should consult a physician.
Meanwhile, cut the carbohydrates from the diet.
Hope tge information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta

I just started on Methylprednisolone (1 prescription only) and amoxicillin yesterday. I also have had high cholesterol for a long time. My doctor has already referred me to a dietitian for elevated cholesterol and elevated hyperglycemia. My doctor is more concerned with my high cholesterol. I am more concerned with my elevated glucose levels. Since I am not a diabetic, the dietitian will not be able to give me a diabetic diet. I am hoping that the dietitian will go over what the carb limits are for personal health issues. In the meantime, I am scheduled for lab work for glucose and thyroid (running high too) next week on XXXXXXX 1, 2017. Should I wait till I finish my two medications? How many days should I wait to get lab work done after I finish my two medications? I don't want my lab work to show high again if the two prescriptions can affect my testing.

Brief Answer:
About glucose monitoring;

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,
For how many days is methylprednisolone prescribed?
You need to check the blood sugar everyday, fasting and after food.
If it persists over 160 mg/ dl even while following a strict diet, you need to see a physician.
After stopping the corticosteroids it will need a 3-4 days period for the blood glucose to get back to normal levels .
You need to check it until you are sure that it is normalized.

Dr.Mirjeta
