default
Posted on Mon, 15 May 2017
Question: I am 61, non-smoker, 6' 230. My bp ranges 145/80-170/88. Am going to have an oblation soon for afib. Had echocardiogram and ekg that confirmed. My heart seems pretty strong, but lots of bad blockage history on father's side. My heart rate is usually 60-65. Did some work in the yard this morning, rested a bit, then took my bp which was 147/88 and heart rate 141, with irregular heart beat picked up. What causes this? After a walk, it ususally doesn't affect heart rate like this.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern, and would explain that these changes in heart rate are quite normal in atrial fibrillation.

You should know that physical or emotional stress, including the changes in blood pressure values can increase your heart rate.

From the other hand atrial fibrillation can be interchangeably transformed in atrial flutter, which could explain your irregular heart beats with this heart rate.

Anyway only a resting ECG during these episodes can confirm what really is going on.

For, this reason, if the situation repeats, I would recommend going to the ER for a resting ECG.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
