Brief Answer:
not to be used

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
Azithromycin should no be taken in early 1st trimester for a chlamydia infection instead a pregnancy safe drug called NITROFURANTOIN can be taken 100mg thrice a day for one week to tide over chlamydia infection.
Azithromycin has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA. Animal studies failed to reveal evidence of fetotoxicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Azithromycin should only be given during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.
All macrolides like erythromycin, azithromycin are category B drugs where human trials in first trimester have not been done but in animals their use have not been found to create any congenital anomalies. HEnce these drugs are used only after 12 weeks of pregnancy to be on a safer side...unless chlamydia is not sensitive to penicillin group or nitrofurantoin group but only to macrolides, then the use may be considered.
