Question: I have been fighting diverticulitis for several weeks. I have sent questions to you and received good advice. For the past two days, my heart rate has been irratic. The range has been at rest 84 to 120 BPM. I have been drinking Gatorade and laying down when the BPM increases to 100 or above. This seems to help for about an hour.
Then, I start feeling exhausted, like someone has unplugged a cork in my feet and drained my body of its energy. Each time this has happened, I have found my heart rate to be elevated.
Am I ok? What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Severe electrolyte imbalance.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query.
Have seen your details.
Diverticular attacks are usually followed by gross electrolyte Imbalance in blood very likely sodium potassium and chloride ions. These are the same ions which are responsible for proper contraction and relaxation of heart muscle.
I would suggest you to go to lab and get blood electrolytes sodium potassium and chloride done. They would take 5 ml blood sample.Very likely the variation in heart rate is due to gross imbalance of sodium potassium and chloride ions in blood.
Follow up with reports.
Hope I was helpful and easy to understand.
Thanks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

If you can then go to urgent care otherwise take coconut water every hour for a day. This would replenish the electrolytes. If the problem still persists go for the tests.

Thanks
