Can Horse Riding Be Done After A Hip Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Apr 2017
Question: I had hip replacement 3 1/2 mos. ago. I am 71 yrs. old and have been riding for over 45 yrs. and i generally ride 3 times a week, four if I'm showing. I don't do jumping, cutting or anything that requires quick side-to-side or back and forth movements. My surgeon told my physical therapist the other day he doesn't want any of his hip replacement patients EVER to ride. I have been getting into and out of my saddle that's on a saddle stand on the ground from both sides with no problems for about 6 wks. and I feel ready to get on my horse (who's very well trained, by the way and has been ridden by an experienced horsewoman since right before my surgery several times a week so he's ready for me.) What do recommend I do?

Brief Answer:
Avoid the activity

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

Since your Doctor has done your hip replacement, you must follow his advise because he knows the position of the implants in your surgery and knows the specific complications.

If you do otherwise, you have the risk of hip dislocation which can be troublesome.

Avoid bringing the thighs together, squatting, cross leg sitting and kneeling.

My advise will be to avoid the activity which your Surgeon has advised against.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
