How To Rule Out Influenza?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Feb 2016
Question: My son's roommate (non sexual) was taken to an ER with temp of 104 and sent home with Dix of influenza B. He arrested and died at home about 16 hours later. Preliminary Dx of septic shock. 29 yr old male . Only Hx I know is several years post splenectomy - platelets problem.

Should we be concerned about exposure of others who worked daily with him and especially my son who shared an apt with him???? Should we have a nasal swab done? My son did NOT get a flu shot. Is tambiflu and/or Abx prophylactically indicated

Brief Answer:
Needs immediate evalaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Sharing an apartment with a patient with such rapid course of an infective disease calls for a check up. The infection might not show up in the first 4-8 days and this is known as an incubation period, following the incubation period comes the infective period. This is how you should go about it

1. Get a complete blood count and x ray done
2. I recommend starting prophylactic dose of Tami Flu
3. Watch out for fever, cough and breathlessness
4. I do not recommend vaccination at this point for the next two weeks.
5. Throat swab should be sent to check got influenza

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Regards
