How To Loose Weight When Suffering From Thyroid Problem?

Posted on Tue, 15 Apr 2014
Question: Eight years ago I was diagnosed with Graves, treated with Radioactive Iodine and went from a hyperthyroid to hypothyroid condition. I have been treated with Levothyroxine and Liothyrinine from the start. The Liothyrinine medication addition was considered to be progressive 8 years ago. I am now told that I should drop this medication and continue with Levothyroxine only. Problem is that after the weight yo-yo effect stabilized after radioactive iodine therapy, it reset to about 50 pounds higher than before my Graves condition and has stayed there all these years give or take a few pounds as medication dosages were adjusted after testing every 3 to 4 months. Questions are : -Do I stop Liothyronine as I am now given to understand that current medical thinking does not endorse it? -How do I lose the weight as diet andxercise is not cutting it anymore? <(I am being treated for high blood pressure which began before my Graves Disease and my cholesterol has fluctuated with my weight. Blood sugar is normal within limits. I am careful with my diet and an active person (walk briskly 3 to 5 times weekly/non-smoker/non-alchohol drinker) and vegetarian (no fish/meat/chicken etc.).>

Brief Answer: weight loss is a task which requires determination Detailed Answer: Dear XXXX, Hi! answering your first question is easy. yes you may drop liothyronine and continue with levothyroxine alone. adjust the dose initially 6 week interval and once the dose is stable, 3-4 monthly monitoring is sufficient. second part about weight loss- it needs further kicking up the physical activity and cutting down the calories. you may take the help of certain weight reducing medicines with the advise of your doctor if nothing works. e.g. qsymia, metformin, orlistat. regards!
