Brief Answer:
Liver function improves on stopping alcohol, can take 6 to 12 months

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in details.
Liver tests usually reflect the levels of enzymes AST, ALT, GGT and Alkaline phosphatase. It is important to know your present levels and how much above normal levels your liver enzymes are.

Liver function will surely improve if you stop drinking and taking Xanax. It can take at least 6 to 12 months to return to safe levels and you should not start taking alcohol or Xanax again.

Please have your liver function tests repeated every 3 months for a year and follow up with your doctors.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek

Brief Answer:
Follow a healthy diet and lifestyle along with stopping xanax and alcohol

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Your liver enzyme levels are mildly elevated and they should come down to normal limits once you stop xanax and alcohol. As discussed earlier, please repeat your liver function tests at 3 months and 6 months.

Other than stopping xanax and alcohol, please take healthy diet and avoid foods containing a higher amount of fats and oils. Also have a good fitness plan.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
AST normal and ALT borderline high in 3 months time

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Normal levels of liver enzymes are the following

ALT 7 to 55 units per liter (U/L)
AST 8 to 48 units per liter (U/L)

Your AST is showing borderline elevation and ALT is twice normal levels. In 3 months time AST should be normal and ALT in the borderline range. You should also avoid taking foods rich in fats and oils.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
