Posted on Tue, 22 Sep 2015
Question: Hello, I'm looking for a second opinion my son was born with bilateral vocal cord paralysis we found that out after him having a broncoscopy at 3 weeks of age because of complaints of noisy breathing aka stridor. The cause of his vocal cord paralysis is unknown. Next week he's getting eartubes and his adenoid removed. His ent specialist said that due to swelling of his throat of the adenoidectomy he may need to be intubated. My question is does the good outweigh the bad on which I should let this adenoidectomy happen or should I be very concerned about him possibly having to be intubated. Is the adenoid removal worth it my son is 20 months by the way

Brief Answer:
Adenoidectomy is the best option you should go for.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you to my virtual clinic HCM!
I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

The first step of getting out of dig is to stop digging. Adenoids once infected cause very trouble and may even lead to the life threatening emergencies. So removal by a surgery is the best possible option for the baby. If not removed now, and intubation is opted, it will have very troublesome complications associated.

In future chances are that adenoiditis comes back and ultimately the surgery will be the option you will need. So go for it right now.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you in no time. If satisfied here, please give a generous five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.
For any disease you have, a timely follow-up after sometime regarding the treatment efficacy and to see any need to change the treatment options is very necessary. Keep a follow up some days after this visit session ends.

So I shouldn't worry about him possibly not being able to breathe on his own after the surgery because of his bilateral voice cord paralysis?

Brief Answer:
yes you should go for the surgery right away.

Detailed Answer:
I welcome you with a follow up and feel sorry the way you are feeling and the pains your baby is in.

I recommend you to please go for the surgery as it is a necessary evil when it comes to the adenoids. Complications are linked to everything in medical profession. So, at least we will be in a better position of not getting the infection of adenoids every other day and will also avoid a bunch of antibiotics needed for future infections.

We don't know the reason of his paralysis and also this is not any reversible injury. It is a defect that will remain there with him unfortunately. As long as his breathing on his own is concerned, it is early to say something. It all depends on how he bears this surgical procedure. I wish very best of his health ahead.
