How Long Is The Recovery Time For Ureteroscopy Procedure?
Question: I may have to undergo a ureteroscopy procedure for removal of a kidney stone. How much discomfort will I encounter after the procedure, how long is the recovery time, will my activities be restricted during recovery?

Hello Sir,
The procedure would probably be done under Spinal anaesthesia or so they would have discussed the anaesthesia with you. If it is spinal, then you would feel a small needle in your back and then your body from waist down would be having no sensation and you would feel heavy in your legs. You will not feel anything during the procedure, at most you might feel that they are doing something but no pain at all. There would be no cut on your body.
They would put a thin scope up your urethra to visualize where the stone is and then break it down with a Lithotripter which also you will not come to know. Then they will put a DJ stent from your kidney till your bladder to help drain the urine and the stone fragments. As they will put a urinary catheter with a bag, all the stone fragments will come out with the urine and there could be some bleeding but no pain. In a day or two that will end and then the catheter can be removed and you can resume normal activities.
The stent however is usually kept for 4 to 8 weeks depending upon Surgeon preference and is removed later as an office procedure.
Therefore, in totality there should be almost no pain and you can continue an almost normal life throughout.

I believe the procedure will be under a general anesthetic. I understand that it is an outpatient procedure and that I will be going home the same day. How long will I be laid up at home recovering? I have heard that the stent is very uncomfortable and sometimes more painful than the kidney stone was. Is that true? Will I be able to resume my active lifestyle (walking and cycling) shortly after the procedure is completed? While the stent is still in place?

Walking and cycling can resumed at the earliest - maybe 3rd or 4th day after the procedure provided all goes well. The stent will not obstruct your activities in any way.
