How Long Does Recovery Take Post Suffering A Stroke?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: I am 50 years old am HIV positive and I recently had a stroke - October 2015. Is it possible to expect complete recovery? For example I have not fully recovered my typing skills, I am sometimes forgetful and sometimes I feel I want to give up on the medicines. I do not have the weakness and the facial palsy now. But I feel I am not quite there yet
I am on Alluvia and Truvada for the HIV and on atorvastatin, clopidogril and neurobine for my stroke. Is the anything else I can do?

Brief Answer:
Recovery would occur slowly

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist and would try my best to help you.

The extent and rapidity of recovery after stroke depends on the area & extent of brain affected due to stroke. However, recovery occurs in most cases of stroke. It occurs slowly and may take 6 months to two years.

The current medications (clopidogrel and atorvastatin) are given to prevent the recurrence of stroke. For recovery, it is mainly physiotherapy and cognitive training. Piracetam or Donepezil tablets may help in recovery of memory.

I hope it helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
