Question: Can Bell's palsy leave lasting effects on facial nerves/ muscles? I had it over 8 years ago and when I move my mouth specific ways my lips sometimes quiver.

Brief Answer:
Yes it can.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HealthcareMagic.

Yes Bell's palsy can leave some remaining deficit in some patients. It is a minority, about 80-90% of patients recover completely without any noticeable change and remember that our faces are not completely symmetrical, might be something you've always had and noticed only now.
But it is possible for some mild facial muscle weakness to remain in a small percentage of patients, so it could be your case.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.

Thank you. The quivering only occurs when I move the lips certain ways. It's not noticeable to others but I feel it. It's been several years. So I can possibly attribute it to muscle weakness?

Detailed Answer:
Yes it is possible, especially if only on the side affected by Bell's palsy. However it is a common phenomenon to which other causes may contribute as well such as caffeine or other stimulants, fatigue, stress etc.

Let me know if I can further assist you.

Last question: I am on medication for GAD, hypothyroidism, low iron, vitamin d, vitamin e, GERD, and cholesterol. I drink coffee as well. Could all of this be contributing factors? It effects the bottom and top lip both sides and mostly in the pucker position. I have health anxiety and I worry it's something terrible like neurological - I see my pop every three to six months and have regular blood work done.

Detailed Answer:
Yes they can have something to with it, especially anxiety is a very common cause, thyroid issue can contribute as well.

One thing is for sure though, it is not a manifestation of something terrible, of that I can assure you as a neurologist.

I hope to have been of help.
