How Long GGT Levels Takes To Normalize After Stopping Alcohol?

default
Posted on Fri, 23 May 2014
Question: I have high GGT (160) which, after doing some research online I attribute to alcohol use. Up to receiving my test, I had a vodka drink (approx 5oz) every night after dinner. I've been doing this for years, and never thought much about this. Now after a life insurance lab test, I saw this high level and determined that I need to get this under control. I do not get "drunk" but simply enjoy a nice drink nightly. The life insurance company still insured me as Standard Non Smoker, so I assume I can't be that bad, but now that I am aware, I want to make sure I can get back to normal limits. First, I have completely stopped drinking alcohol. With abstinence and proteins and fruits, about how long until my levels are returned and I am healthier?

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Its a wrong assumption noted by many individuals that intake of small quantity of alcohol will cause no harm. Continued use of even small quantity of alcohol over years can cause initially fatty liver followed by Hepatitis. If there is further intake it will lead to irreversible change that is Cirrhosis of Liver. GGT is quite specific indicator of alcoholic liver disease. If other Liver enzymes and functions are normal then there is no cause for concern.
After stopping of alcohol ( total and absolute abstinence ) it may take 3 to 6 months, sometimes as long as 1 year. for the Liver function to normalize.
