How Is Salphingitis Transmitted To Humans?
Question: I am a wildlife rehabilitator. I am currently treating a hen with salpingitis (last stages). I accidentally drank from a kitchen water glass that I had been allowing the hen to drink from. I consumed about 2-3 tablespoons of water before I realized OMG that it was the hens water. How concerned should I be????

The salphingitis is caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp, or Pasteurella multocida . These organisms are not excreted through the mouth of the hen and hence there is hardly any risk of you getting an infection.

I'm aware how this typically transmits zoonotially. However this bird has been sitting in cloaca secretions for hours. She had been pruning herself and had this on her beak and face. I fear the water I drank may have been infectious. She is now in respiratory failure. Does this change your diagnosis? Should I be on a prophylactic course of antibiotics? I am very concerned but too embarrassed to go to an ER. Please help

If you have any of the water remaining, get a bacteriological examination and culture.
If there is no growth of a pathogen, it is not infected and nothing more needs to be done.
Salphingitis leads to peritonitis, septicemia and death.
Respiratory failure is a feature of the advancing disease and not the cause. It does not call for a change in diagnosis unless there are other supporting evidence for a lung infection like pneumonia.
Starting a prophylactic course of antibiotic will have an adverse risk benefit ratio, in my opinion with the evidence at hand. If the water is confirmed to be contaminated, it may change the picture.

Unfortunately the water sample is long gone. Is there any other test available pre symptoms? Is there any value in visiting an ER or urgent care?
