Posted on Tue, 30 Jun 2015
Question: Hi,
I was wondering what the current research is reporting about the use of Strontium (I combine it with plant-based calcium) in the treatment of osteoporosis? Could you include some references?
Thank you.

I am post-menopausal by 8 years.

I warmly Welcome you!

Thanks for consulting me at virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.

It is still under research studies, how effective is strontium in treating osteoporosis. I was doing a research in XXXXXXX years back on radioactive strontium-89 use for prostate cancer and advanced bone cancer, and found it helpful when given intravenously.

To my patients with pain and sensitivity in teeth, I suggest Strontium based toothpastes (e.g. Sensodyne-SC), and it works. So it has an effect on bones, and teeth. I recommend Strontium ranelate dietary supplements for bone strength, in osteoporotic bone weakening in postmenopausal patients in my clinic. It helps patients by improving, bone, joint cartilage and collagen (a protein basis for the connective tissues). I recommend from 0.5-1.5mg of strontium for daily usage depending on patient scenarios. Using too much dose isn't safe.

A wide research is available on uses of strontium for osteoporosis treatment in major US medical journals and hospital websites, research and CME sections for reference to assist the healthcare personnels be familiar with the latest guidelines. But it may be misleading for the general public as they are not trained for extracting out of the research articles such as to treat on the basis of that.

I recommend you to consult your treating physician for further plans and prescription if you want strontium to be on your medicine list for longer use.

Thanks. This has been helpful. I need to check the ones I have been taking as I think they might be Strontium carbonate, not ranelate. I will definitely be following up with my physician.

Have a good day,
