How Effective Is Norethindrone In Preventing Pregnancy?

Question: I have been on Norethindrone (Ortho Micronor)for 2 1/2 months and take it religiously. I'm on it because I have Factor V Leiden. But it concerns me as it's not as effective as combination birth control. My husband and I do not want to get pregnant as we have a 5 month old and we do not want to have to use condoms. If taken at the same time daily, how effective is it? Can I have sex around the time of ovulation without concerns? I still have a period and spotting here and there and I do not take breaks between packs.

1) Considering your medical situation, and your contraceptive needs ; you need to consider other contraceptive methods; like levonorgestel Intra uterine device.

2 ) Tab Norethidron, if taken regularly has been proved to be a good contraceptive as progesterone only pill . With it's regular use having sex even around the ovulation days can be safe.

3 ) Spotting is a common problem with progesterone only pills even taken regularly, it's known as breakthrough bleeding.

Thanks for going through the answer and reverting back for the query.

1 ) First of all as you have mentioned that you don't prefer barrier contraceptive like condom and you also have some breakthrough bleeding with progesterone pill, it was my opinion to use LNG IUD.

2 ) with my clinical experience and the fact that LNG IUD releases only 20 microgram of the drug perday; totally only 52 mg is delivered over 5 years. This helps the minimise drug delivery in the body and consequent effects.
This is quite less drug dose as compared to oral medication .

3 ) of course it is just a suggestion, and you can take final decision on your own.
