How Does Duphaston Affect The Baby?

default
Posted on Sat, 28 Feb 2015
Question: Hello,
please help me. I am 25 years old, 5month ago I miscarried in 7th week of pregnancy. Now I am in 5th week of pregnancy again and my doctor recomended me to take Duphaston. I am not sure about that. I think the body knows what to do and if it decides not to nourish the fetus, there is a reason for that. I am afraid if I take it, maybe later can appear some defects. Please help me to make the right decision. Does anybody know how often happend that children born after they mothers used Duphaston while pregnant have some health problems? Thanks a lot. Lenka

Brief Answer:
Please take progesterone, it will help you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Duphaston is progesterone, which supports the growing fetus .
It is definitely known to have a role in protecting the pregnancy and reducing the risk of miscarriage.
There is no known study that shows that babies of mothers who used Duphaston while pregnant have health issues.
I get your logic, but then, nobody should take folic acid, or any treatment of any kind to save a baby, if the pregnancy is high risk.
I strongly feel that you should go with your doctors' recommendation and take Duphaston.
Another alternative is to take natural micronized progesterone ( a variant of progesterone ) which is less controversial than Duphaston.
That will make you feel better, as it has less side effects.
Am attaching a study here, which you can go through -

All the best

Thank you very much for your answer. I will read the study, thank you very much. I have one more question. The miscarriage, if it happend because the fetus is not ok, what is the reason, is it the genetic defects, or what? I mean, if I take Duphaston, and it will keep the baby even if it is not completle helathy, will i find yout on the test that are made in 13th week of pregnancy? Or when the body finds out that its keeping baby that sholud have died? Will I loose it as i finish taking it? Or it(Duphaston) isnt so strong that it would keep some that bad?
I wish I knew why I misscaried the first time. We didn´t plan it, so there were several parties, alcohol, some smoking, hot yoga, and I used to have a job where I lifted quit heavy boxes. And my life style wasnt perfect that time. Now I am trying to make it better. But it was going the same as this time, I found out in 5th week, and I dont have any nausea or breast ache, like my ex-doctor said I should have.

Brief Answer:
Explained.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the appreciation.
The commonest reason for a first trimester miscarriage is genetic abnormalities in the baby.
This occurs due to random errors in the chromosomes ( genes ) during the making of the baby.
This is pure chance, and more than 90 % of women go on to have a successful pregnancy the next time round.
So please relax.
The confirmation would have been if the aborted material was sent for chromosomal analysis and genetic testing.
Other possible reasons are - strong exercise, smoking, drinking, late nights, erratic eating, diseases like uncontrolled hypothyroidism, diabetes etc.
For the rest of your questions -
If the baby is not healthy, you would have a miscarriage mostly, Duphaston will not prevent that.
The tests done during the 13th week of pregnancy pick up MOST abnormalities, but not all.
Duphaston is not that strong, that it would keep an unhealthy pregnancy growing.
Also, some women do not feel any nausea or breast tenderness all throughout their pregnancy at all.
Nausea or breast tenderness is not a reliable symptom of a healthy pregnancy, more important is to have cardiac activity in the baby by 7 weeks of pregnancy.
Dont worry about the lack of any ' mythical ' symptoms of pregnancy.
Take lots of rest.
Avoid stress / intercourse /travelling till the scan shows a viable pregnancy.
All the best this time round.

I talked to one mor specialist, and he said i shold take it but first go to blood test for trombofilia. If it is positive it is not good to take it, it could have opposite involve. What do you think
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
No testing required.

Detailed Answer:
Thrombophilia is a very rare condition, and occurs only at very high doses.
It is an expensive test and absolutely not needed or recommended routinely to all women.
You should take the natural micronized progesterone, and no testing required.
Trust me on this.
Take care.

Don´t be sorry, I am sorry, that was stupid question.
I can buy it in eshop, it is cream applied to the neck, wrists, the inside of the arms or thighs. Is that right?
And what is the difference between Duphaston and this natural micronized progesteron? Is it that Duphaston is synthetic substitute of the natural progesteron? I can manage the side effect of Duphaston if it is the only important difference from the natural progesteron. It is 200x cheaper :) But if you say the natural progesteron is simply better and healthier, I will deffinetly use it. Thank you

And two more questions, there is flu epidemic in my city, and I am not sure which medcin to support imunity I can use. Is echinacea sirup ok?

I take folic acid and omega 3-fatty acides, and I wonder if I can take chlorela japan as well, not for the baby but for me :) but just if it isn´t too much.

Brief Answer:
Explained.

Detailed Answer:
Not the cream, no.
That is natural progesterone, which is hormone replacement for menopausal women.
I am talking about natural micronized progesterone.
It is in the form of oral capsules, vaginal inserts .
Vaginal route is more preferred due to more benefits and better absorption and minimal side effects.
Duphaston is a variant of progesterone, not natural micronized progesterone.
If Duphaston is way cheaper, please use that, there is not much of a difference in terms of side effects.
But try and find out the cost of natural micronized progesterone, not the natural progesterone cream.
I think the brand there maybe Utrogestan.
Please go for the flu vaccination, that is best for you.
Echinacea and Chlorella both are super foods, both can be taken to boost your immunity, no problem .

Yes Utrogestan. My doctor asked mi which of them i want and said it is the same, there just difference in the way of using (oral - vaginal). Ok I will take it. So I think thats it :) Thank you very much :)
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes, take care.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, but it is different from the cream you mentioned.
That is not the product intended.
Utrogestan is just fine.
Oral route might cause you dizziness, sedation, fainting etc.
Vaginal route is far safer and far better in terms of effectiveness.
Take care.
