Posted on Wed, 22 Nov 2017
Question: Hello

I'm taking PEP for potential hiv risk exposure.

The side effects are quite severe fatigue and some joint pains , muscle aches. Can i expect these effects to go away once i cease the tablets after 28 days ? There is no risk of having permanent side effects ?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Common side effects with PEP

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you.

I an Dr. kakkar(Dermatologist and Venereologist). I have noted your concern.

Side effects like fatigue, muscle and joint ache and others like nausea, headache are quite common with antiretroviral drugs. They are temporary in nature and would cease once you are through PEP. However if you experience severe side effects like skin rash, vomiting, loss of appetite, oral ulcers, abdominal pain/ tenderness, jaundice etc you must stop PEP and report immediately to your treating doctor.
