Question: My 24 year old step son has (apparently always) had pretty constant nasal congestion. He has a primary care visit coming up. What will be important for him to tell the doctor so the doctor can advise him on possible causes and treatments?

Brief Answer:
Possible diagnosis: Deviated nasal septum, allergic rhinitis

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Persistent nasal congestion is likely due to allergic rhinitis (which is inflammation of nasal mucosa due to allergic reaction leading to nasal congestion). Allergy to dust, pollen, pets etc., are common causes. Identifying the triggering factor for allergy is important. Allergic testing can help. Treatment is by avoiding triggering factors and the use of antihistamines like Cetirizine to relieve symptoms.

Another important consideration is the presence of nasal septal deviation (sometimes co-existent with allergic rhinitis) resulting in nasal congestion, which is predominant on one side of the nose. Examination of the nose can confirm the diagnosis.

Please make sure that he mentions about the nasal congestion during visit with the primary care provider for necessary evaluation.

Hope this answers your questions.
