Posted on Thu, 31 Aug 2017
Question: Hello Doc,
My Name is XXXXXXX XXXXXXX and my baby boy is 10 days old now. We have some queries which we do not understand. Please find them below.
1. There is a lump on his head which is kind of soft compare to rest of his head. Is this because of that he is a vaccum baby ?
2. He is having problems in burping sometimes. We tried many ways but he is not taking burps.
3. He is also letting milk out of his mouth after most of the feeds.
4. His lower lips tremble sometimes as well.

Please let us know if you need any more details.

Thanks in advance.

Regards, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for asking on this platform

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.
1) The localised swelling in the scalp can be cephalhematoma, a minor complication of Vacuum delivery. In most of the cases it gets subsided within 2-3 weeks on its own and no specific treatment is needed. Just observe if there is increase in swelling or if it gets painful. Please consult your pediatrician if you notice any of these.
2) Sometimes parents are not aware of the burping just because baby may not produce burp sound. Small amount of regurgitation of feed is normal in this age as the valve of food pipe is immature in this age and symptom improves as the baby grows. I suggest you to continue burping and to keep the baby in upright position for about 10-15 minutes after each feed. If the amount of vomits is large or baby is not gaining weight you may need to consult your pediatrician.
3) Trembling of lower lip, sudden awakening from sleep following noise is normal in this age and it suggests that reflexes are normal.
So I won't get overly worried for all these complaints. Just continue giving routine care and please let me know if you have any more query.
Wishing for your baby's good health.
Regards
