How Can A Cyst On The Ovary Be Treated?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Mar 2017
Question: Hello. I've been trying to get pregnant for the past two years. I've had two miscarriages, one being a partial molar pregnancy at 20 weeks. Last month, I had my yearly Pap with no notification of issues. This past week, I started having terrible pain in my right lower abdomen. I went for a CT scan today and found that I have a 3.8cm cyst on my right ovary and was told that I also have fullness in my cervix. The gastro dr told me to make an appt with obgyn immediately. I can't get in with them until next week. Should I be concerned this fullness is related to cancer? And what are my options related to the cyst? Could this also be the cause of our issues with getting pregnant?

Brief Answer:
Cancer not likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.

Fullness of cervix is more likely to be due to a mild inflammation rather than cancer. Since your PAP smear last month was normal there is no need to worry.

A cyst in the ovary can be a simple cyst or a complex cyst. if it is a simple cyst then it can happen due to hormonal changes and can regress on its own. A complex cyst can be worrisome and can affect the fertility.

Wishing you good health.

Thank you, Dr. Tayal! What would be the cause of the mild inflammation? Im assuming my obgyn will run tests to determine if the cyst is simple or complex?

Brief Answer:
Ultrasound scan can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
MRI scan or ultrasound scan will confirm if the cyst is simple or complex. A mild inflammation of cervix can happen due to an infection or rough intercourse. it is not a worrisome finding.
Hope my answer is helpful.
