Question: Hi I’ve been an alcoholic for about 6 years (I’m 28 female) I decided it was time to quit a few months ago. I had a big scare my urine was very dark XXXXXXX I was always tired, nauseated all the time... I went to the ER where they did a liver functions test my ATL and ASL were both around 350 to 360. The doctor said that they were still recoverable levels. After that I stopped drinking for a while, but relapsed for a month or so. I haven’t had a drink now in a week, but my urine is still dark in the morning. Is that normal? I feel much better, but I’m constantly anxious about how much damage I’ve done and if it was finally enough to do me in...

It seems I can’t transfer the records to this message bubble. Is there certain specific things your looking for that I can relay? Is there an actual email I can send the file to?

I’m sorry, I tried to upload them as best I could. They were in a format that wasn’t accepted, so it’s all pictures. Again I’m sorry and I hope it’s enough.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I went through your results.
You had mentioned earlier that your urine was still dark and you were worried. In the report it is mentioned, the urine was clear. Also there was no bilirubin in urine. So your urine is absolutely fine. You probably saw concentrated urine. Drink enough fluids.
Regarding the damage caused to liver by alcohol, your albumin and A/G ratio are within normal limits. So there is no evidence of chronic liver disease like cirrhosis.
But your liver enzymes are pretty high and the numbers do not look like they are due to alcohol intake.
You can repeat the liver panel and based on the repeat test results further course of treatment may be planned.

I’m still waking up every morning to very dark yellow, almost orange urine. I drink about 12 glasses of water a day, so I wasn’t sure if that was normal color range?

It’s good to hear the results explained to me the hospital didn’t or maybe I didn’t ask the right questions, so thank you. I suppose it’s unlikely that I did enough damage in a two months time to cause damage since those results?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
You can upload a picture of your urine. I will have a look at it and say whether it is normal or not.
But as per the test results, it is normal.

You have damaged liver as evidenced by raised liver enzymes. The pattern is not suggestive of damage caused by alcohol. But alcohol intake may further damage it.
You need to quit drinking alcohol and get examined by a liver specialist to find the cause for elevated liver enzymes.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
