Question: Hi, I have been diagnosed with pelvic congestion syndrome. My gynaecologist prescribed Provera 10mg 3x daily for 90 days. On reading the patient leaflet I’m now scared to take as it says possible side effects can be blood clots. My platelet count is sometimes quite higher than usual and have to have this monitored every 6 months, I also can’t take the pill etc because of this. I have never had a bolt clot but is it worth risking taking provera with this risk?

Brief Answer:
Anticoagulants may be needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

Taking provera can increase the risk of blood clotting and more in your case that you suffer from pelvic congestion ( varicose veins of pelvis) and increased platelets count.
You may need to discuss with your doctor for usage of antiagregants such aspirin or anticoagulants such warfarine or clopidogrel. Using them together with provera may lower the risk of blood clots.
Also if this isn't considered as a good option by your doctor you can discuss for another way of treating pelvic congestion such non surgical embolisation procedure.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
