Hi .. I Had Inguinal Surgery (Laproscoptic) About 4 Years

Question: Hi .. I had inguinal surgery (Laproscoptic) about 4 years ago to deal with a movement issued in my left leg. I was getting pain, and almost a complete seizure of my leg which increased with any anxiety. during and MRI my leg was shaking to the point they had to stop until I was given a Xanax. To my amazement I walked out of the MRI with no leg issues while the Xanax was working. My leg has very very slowly improved over the last 4 years but and have moved from Xanax to Clonazapam. The best diagnosis I have (I think) is stress related epilepsy. It may have been a co-incidence that I had an undiagnosed inguinal hernia - or it may have gotten worse just prior to the beginning of this (I was moving some heavy items). I cannot pinpoint the source. I do know that in the previous year or 2 sometimes I would notice an issue completing a step but nothing that was debilitating or required medication. So that is why I suspect I opened up the inguinal hernia further (large 9cm x 9cm or so) and it has been a tremendous struggle to remain working under medication (sleepyness caused by medication) ever since. Other medical issues include a Hiatal Hernia I have had for many years for which I take Dexilant (60mg of Prolosac does has a similar result). I also suffer from constant migraines and have for many many years - long before this. My main issue is the Clonazapam - how do I get off of it and keep my movement without my leg stiffening up again. I have been MRI's from brain to toe and nothing has been found. I have been to orthopedic specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists etc. I will say all of this occured during a very bad marriage (emotionally abusive I would say to myself and my 2 boys) for which I filed for divorce a year ago. It is almost finished as the decree offer has gone in to the other party. Help! If anyone has ideas for other medicatiions I am open. I have tried many epilepsy drugs (baclofen - minimal improvement) and a few psychiatric drugs to prop my mood up (cymbalta). I am desperate to start getting off these drugs. I want to get my Hiatal Hernia fixed to get off the dexilant (I wonder if there are interactions) - certainly my migraines are increased by poor bowel movement due to constipation etc). Fiber can help. I would love to regain my health but it feels like the first step is this leg stiffness issue. I stretch out regularly - I do Karate and started after initial periods of physio. It has probably helped more than anything. When I am completely stretched out it does feel I do not have the stiffness issues to the same degree. Sometime drinking a scotch helps and on one occasion I tried marijuana (legal here now) and that also helped. But both are not ideal from an awareness perspective. The marijuana helped both the leg and switched the migraines off almost immediately. I have tried CBD oil and it does nothing for me (legal over the counter here too now).

Brief Answer:
Cannabis is a good possibility in your case.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query and here is my advice.

In my opinion, since cannabis is working and is legal in your area, you can continue with it.

The leg-shaking has nothing to do with inguinal herniation, I think too that anxiety is playing a major role in your condition.

Clonazepam should be stopped gradually, not suddenly (half of the dose lowering every two weeks) in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

You can try also yoga or physical therapy.

Discuss with your Doctor for these issues.

I hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
