Question: Hi. I believe I have skipped my period as I am a week late and ai never skip my period. I know I am not pregnant either since I took tests. I believe I may have not ovulated since I lost a few pounds and was sick around the time i ovulated the very start of this month. If my missed period is due to being anovulatory will gaining back the few pounds help me ovulate again so my period will restart?

Brief Answer:
Many causes for missed period

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. There are many causes of a missed or late period, and you are right that not ovulating, which can also be related to body weight changes, can cause this. There may be many other causes, including stress as well. Most women do have skipped or late periods from time to time, even if you haven't had one before, and we don't get concerned until you haven't had a period for 3 months straight, at which point we would start to worry something else was going on, and would want to do more testing.

As far as your weight loss, while it may have been partially related to missing your period, your body will likely ovulate normally next cycle, as it would have adjusted to the new weight. So I wouldn't say it is necessary that you try to gain the weight back (unless you are underweight). The timing of your next ovulation and next period may also be irregular because of this interruption in your cycle, or you may find that you start your next period at the expected time next month.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Yes. I have heard that stress can also cause people to miss periods as well as certain hormone imbalances and a few other possible reasons. And if I did in fact skip ovulation then I realize I can ovulate at any time. I am just going to relax more and gain a few pounds back in the coming days and see what happens. Thank you for your answer.

Although I realize thst I can ovulate at an irregular time next cycle, is it true that I could ovulate in 10-12 days from now like I would have had I gotten my period since you said I will likely ovulate next cycle? I could have already started the next cycle just without a period from what I have heard, or my body could be working on ovulating soon is that correct?

Brief Answer:
Your next period will likely be unpredictable

Detailed Answer:
Yes, your next period may come anytime, it will be hard to predict. Sometimes it can come when you would expect it the following month, but often it will come sooner, and is often heavier than usual.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.

If I did indeed miss this period and its because I did not ovulate, won’t the bleeding I experience sooner or later just be breakthrough bleeding and not a real period? Thats what I read and that that would not be the start of a true new cycle which I can ovulate anytime around there or after. Also would I be able to induce breakthrough bleeding? I have also heard its possible I will just not bleed altogether until sometime after I ovulate again, unless of course my missing period is due to stress or some condition. Thank you once again I truly appreciate you helping me. Im just a bit worried.

I also realize its possible I ovulated later but i have had no fertile runny mucus in the last couple of weeks and didnt get much at all this cycle. I think I may get tested though eventually to see if theres an underlying issue. Im getting older and me and my husband want to have kids.

Brief Answer:
It will be difficult to predict

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

You may have breakthrough bleeding, or you may not bleed at all until you ovulate again and have a "normal" period. You theoretically could induce breakthrough bleeding by using progesterone, but I don't think there is any need to do that.

I would try not to worry. You are too young to likely have menopause issues, and most likely you will start to have normal periods again in the next few months.

While waiting maybe the hardest thing to do at this point, it is the only thing to do for now.
