Question: Hello , I’m 38 yrs in age & I do workout in gym most days of week . I regularly run 10 kM & do cycling for one hr on alternate days . I want to ask what is healthy & recommended heart rate zone that I should never exceed during workout . Can I touch my maximum heart rate that is 220-38= 182 . Can I continue to do workout at my maximum heart rate for longer period of time ? I don’t have diabetes or high BP or any other disease but still I want to keep things in check .

Normally my heart rate remain at 132/- during workout . My resting heart rate in the morning is around 47 & during day it remains at 50/-

Please advise safest heart zone for my age group during workout:
Thanks

Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that theoretically you can exercise up to your maximal heart rate.

Anyway, this is not a safe and healthy exercise, as it can expose your heart to a higher risk for athletes heart, which is characterized by heart enlargement and possible cardiac arrhythmia.

So, I would not recommend working out so hard!

It is normal in sport persons to have a lower heart rate.

Anyway for short periods of time (up to 15 minutes) you can achieve a heart rate up to 150bmp, which is not considered harmful for such short periods of time.

Hope you will find this information helpful!
