Hello, I Been Experiencing Really Weird Experiences Lately. I Been

Question: Hello,
I been experiencing really weird experiences lately. I been feeling randomly dizzy throughout the day, whether im sitting or standing. My heart rate feels off, my heart races to the point where I feel out of breath. My breasts have been getting bigger. This is the biggest they’ve ever been. But im just blaming it on my weight gain. I been very nauseous throughout the day or when im eating. I am on birth control and I’ve been switching the patch like it was instructed by my gynecologist. I got my cycle last month which was incredibly short and light but it could be the birth control. Out of concern I took three tests. The first one came up negative, the second one showed positive after an hour but im pretty sure it was an evaporation line, and the third showed a very very faint positive line which disappeared after a few mins. Could these be pregnancy symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms may be caused by pregnancy but are not specific to it-

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Dizziness, increases in breast size and feeling strange may happen with pregnancy but are not specific to pregnancy (this means they happen with other conditions or for other reasons as well).

I would recommend you to have another pregnancy test tomorrow morning with the first urine (which normally is the most concentrated urine) as this may have a higher chance of coming out positive if you are pregnant.
You may use a different brand of the urinary test as well to make sure it is not a problem with the brand (generally this is rarely the case but it may be best to try a different make). For more accurate result you will need to follow the exact instructions on the package related to the time you should read the test.

To conclude:
- a faint positive pregnancy test very likely indicates pregnancy
- your symptoms may be due to pregnancy but anxiety (and other conditions) may cause similar symptoms as well
- for a more reliable result, you may repeat the urine pregnancy test with the first-morning urine (it is more concentrated) and try to use a different brand of test. Follow the instructions meticulously when it comes to reading the test.
- BHGC blood test is a test that your doctor may do in the office and surely confirm pregnancy or rule it out.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal if further medical assistance is needed.

Thanks for replying that helped. But what about my birth control, I been on the patch for about 7 months now. I will do another test and possibly get blood work done if it shows positive but could my patch fail?

Brief Answer:
It may happen to be pregnant even if you use the patch

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

It is a pleasure to be able to help.
As for being pregnant while using the patch, unfortunately, this can happen. There are two major reasons:
- one has to do with the use of the patch. If it is not used as recommended (changed in due time) then it is expected it will fail to protect against pregnancy.
- another reason is failure rates which are characteristic of almost all contraceptive methods. Even with proper use around 5% or women have an unexpected pregnancy. Each method of contraception has its own rate of protection or failure and even though patches have a high rate of protection, it is not 100%.
This protection may be reduced even more if recently you have been using certain medications that may interact with the patch and reduce its effectiveness. Also if you have gained weight, this may affect the effectiveness of the patch.

To conclude:
- it may happen in a few cases that a woman may get pregnant even with proper use of the patch, this due to its protection rate that is not 100%. Almost no single protection method has 100% protection.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal if further medical assistance is needed.
