Question: Hello Doctors.
IS there any way of increasing a persons libido? About 4 months ago I had visited my doctor for fatigue, lack of sex drive and inability to maintain an erection. my doctor took some blood and tested my testosterone level and it was slightly above 200. He aid low normal range was about 250 +. He prescribed and under the arm Testosterone Application twice daily (Axiron). I have been on the testosterone treatment for over 3 months now and although my energy level has increased, my libido has not. I just do not have any desire for sex. I think about it, have tried several times with very poor results and am getting more and more frustrated. I was just wondering if there is any type of supplement that would assist in increasing the libido, so I can go back to having a normal sex life. I can think of no other contributing factors that may cause this but wanted your opinion prior to me discussing this with my doctor once again. ( for the record, my doctor has retired and his son has taken over his practice as he has just recently received his PHD, so I am wondering if maybe he is just not too familiar with this issue
I appreciate your thoughts on this
Regards
doctor

Brief Answer:
Anxiety and medications (Pepcid, Xanax) may cause low libido- further explanations below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service,

I read your query carefully and understand your concern.

There are several causes of low libido. I noticed in your medical information that you have anxiety and you also use Pepcid and Xanax.

There is not much information on the time you started these drugs and the time the low libido started but it is worth mentioning that both these medications (Pepcid and Xanax) may affect libido and cause low sex drive.

Anxiety may affect sex drive as well and proper treatment of it is necessary. Xanax is generally used for short term treatment of anxiety as it may cause dependence and many side effects (including low libido), while there are drugs available that can be safely used long term for anxiety.
If you have arthritis that is not well under control this may cause low libido as well so proper pain management is needed if you have joint pain.

So when you see your doctor I would recommend you to discuss with him/her:

- the current treatment you are having for anxiety and the possibility of having proper long term treatment.

- depending on the time you are on Xanax, you may need special advice on how to gradually withdraw from it so your anxiety does not worsen

- the possible relationship between Xanax and Pepcid with the low libido

- possibly checking your thyroid (FT4 and TSH) just to rule it out as a possible cause of low libido and having a general check such as basic metabolic profile (if not done one in the last year)

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Kind regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
