Had Unprotected Sex During Mid Cycle. Having Delayed Periods, Feeling Cramps. What Could Be The Reason?

Question: Hi, I may sound weird when I ask this, but I really want to be sure of certain things. I had protected sex 3 nights after around 10-12 days of my periods. I have a cycle of 25-27 days. He used to withdraw as soon as he used to cum. I didn't take any emergency contraceptive pills. it's 29th day of my cycle now and I am still not having my periods. I am feeling period - like cramps since past 3 days but nothing is happening. Are condoms really safe? and I am out of any risk? I had a few frequent drinks too last month due to work stress. can that be the reason? I am also sure that there was no contact of sperms and that the condoms didn't fail or tear. Please help. I am really tensed.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

I can understand your concern for the pregnancy status. Since there was ejaculation inside the condom, so chances of pregnancy are almost nil unless or until there was any spilling of the semen like there was a tear or hole in the condom which you mentioned was not there. If there was any contact of precum with your vagina then chances of pregnancy are there although less.

It is true that stress and alcohol consumption can effect periods and cause them to be delayed. But you are still to get your periods and you should get them in a few days. High level of stress, cholesterol, hormonal imbalance, chain smoking, dramatic changes in your life style may also be some of the common causes of delayed or irregular periods.

You should wait for your periods and if they get delayed then get a check up done from your gynecologist. Reasons other than pregnancy like a hormonal imbalance should be ruled out.

Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

Painful cramps and pain in legs can be due to premenstrual symptoms. There is usually no discharge for a few days after your period and a few days before your next period. Hence they are called dry days. Your periods should begin in a few days and if you miss them then the causes of delayed periods need to be ruled out.

The cause of irregular periods could be due to hormonal imbalance, stress, chronic illness, polycystic ovarian disease, thyroid gland disorders or diseases, pituitary gland tumors or cyst, galactorrhea, prolactinomas etc.

Thank you Doctor!

Just one last question. Does this dry days necessarily mean that one is not pregnant?

Thanks for all your kindness to answer my queries.

Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

Vaginal dryness can occur in pregnancy also. `It is mainly due to reduced estrogen levels. You had protected intercourse, so chances of pregnancy are less.

To be absolutely clear about the status of pregnancy, you can do a urine for pregnancy test after 1 week of missing your periods or get a serum HCG test done which is more specific than a urine test.

Hope this answers your query.

Wishing you good health.
