Does Prolonged Dosage Of Ibuprofen Cause Kidney Damage?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Dec 2015
Question: I am just getting over the shingles. I have had them for one month. I have been treated for the first couple of weeks with Hydrocodone and Ibuprofen. The last couple of weeks, I have been off Hydrocodone and put on Gabapentin and Ibuprofen. I have been taking 100 mg Gabapentin 5 times a day and Ibuprofen 800 mg 3 times a day. Yesterday I stopped taking both and these and went on Tylenol because I have swelling in my legs. The left leg is worse than the right one. I am wondering what is causing that and if I should go off Ibuprofen. I have heard stories that staying on Ibuprofen for a long period of time is bad for your Kidneys. What can I do to decrease the swelling in my legs. I am on a regimen daily of 25 mg of Hydrochlorothiazide and 20 mg Atorvastatin. Also wondering what is the cause of the swelling in the legs. Is this a side effect of Gabapentin.

Brief Answer:
PLease, send an image and also the reasons for taking hydrochlorothiazide!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this shingle outbreak and the recent swelling of your legs. To be of most help, I will like to obtain more information from you.

1. An image of the swollen legs
2. Why are you taking hydrochlorothiazide for?

It is true that taking Ibuprofen can cause kidney damage in the long run. I am not exactly sure that this is the cause at this time but strongly recommend that you do not return to it. Swollen legs is not a known side effect of gabapentin.

I will provide more insights and guidance n how to address this when I obtain more information from you. I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience.
