Question: What is the difference between using a nasal spray with oxymetazoline or one with phenylephrine or one with sodium chloride? What is the significance of nasal blockage every 2-3 hours in my left nostril requiring me to use a nasal spray every 2-3 hours to clear that blockage?

Brief Answer:
Can be allergic rhinitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Xylometazoline and phenylephrine constrict blood vessels in the nose so that congestion is reduced. Using them can cause side effects like high blood pressure and if used for prolonged period, can cause rebound congestion, ie more congestion after stopping.

Saline is just salt solution, same as that in our body, it just keeps nose moist and helps clear the path. It has no side effects.

In your case, this may be allergic rhinitis, ie inflammation of nasal lining cells. You need to get it checked by an ENT specialist. If it is allergic, then anti allergic medicines can help.

Hope this helps.
Regards
