Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: I have used pellet hormone therapy the last 2 years, I'm female 62 years old. I like it except the clitoris is bigger. Will that go back to the normal size, do I need to stop the pellets?

Brief Answer:
Your clitotal enlargement will not go away, and it is caused by the pellets

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Most "pellet" hormone therapy regimens contain at least some ingredients that are a form of testosterone. Testosterone is not generally recommended for conventional hormone replacement because it increases the risk of heart disease and blood clots.
Because "bioidentical"
hormones are technically dietary supplements, they are not required to test them for safety and evaluate them for side-effects.

Testosterone is the hormone in a male that is responsible for the development of the penis. If a woman is given testosterone, she may develop virilization, which is developing male characteristics like facial hair, chest hair and penile enlargement.

In a woman, testosterone may make the clitoris enlarge and eventually a small penis can even grow. These changes are permanent and are actually deliberately induced in female to male transgender patients.

So in summary, I recommend you stop the hormone therapy you are currently taking as it poses health risks as well as you may experience further clitotal enlargement with prolonged treatment. The changes you already have are not reversible. An OBGYN physician can prescribe alternative hormone treatments that are safer and better regulated.

I hope this information was helpful to you and that I was able to adequately answer your question today. If you need any further clarification or have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
