Does Marijuana Damage Kidneys?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Oct 2014
Question: I have two different questions: #1 Can smoking too much (or any) pot make your kidneys useless for live donation? #2 I used the Scopalomine patch for a week or two for bad spinal stenosis pain, and it worked; HOWEVER, I stopped nearly a month ago, and I STILL have blurry vision and somewhat of a slurred speech which were brought on with the patch. When will this stop????

Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern.

Transplant programs routinely screen potential organ donors and recipients for substance abuse to ensure that organs, which are an extremely scarce resource, go to those who will benefit most. Substance abuse is a major concern for transplant doctors, because it can complicate a patient's ( both donor and recepient) recovery.

Pot ( cannabis ) mainly affects the liver but 10 to 15 percent of the Pot is also excreted via kidneys.

I would nt leep to say that Pot makes kidneys useless for transplant donation but smoking pot or any other substance having abuse potential can lead to complications for both the donor and recepient.

The withdrawl effects of Scopolamine patch and the adverse effects dont last for more than a week after using the 24 hour patch as the half life of the drug is only 9.5 hours.

Scopolamine overdose could be a cause for your symptoms.

kindly send the exact dose which you took for the week. Analgesics, Alcohol and other anticholinergic medicine if taken along scopolamine can cause significant unwanted side effects.

Kindly send the names of other medications if any that you weree using along scoplamine

Let me know if you have any query

wishing you best of health

Thanks
