Posted on Thu, 25 Jun 2015
Question: my husband is taking Tamoxifen for 3 years now he was diagnosed with breast cancer at 34, I am pregnant and unsure if it is safe. I am considering terminating. His oncologist said they don't recommend pregnancies asked a few days ago. 3 years ago when he started treatment his dr back then told us there really wasn't enough research to provide a clear answer and but another dr said it was ok. what is your opinion?

Brief Answer:
Its safe to continue pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to healthcare magic.com
If your husband has been taking Tamoxifen treatment FOR GYNECOMASTIA for last 3 years, which is an anti-oestrogen,it contrary to the belief in fact improves the sperm quality and improves fertility.
Tamoxifen is not known to cause any DNA or chromosomal defect in the sperm structure which can be transferred to the child. Hence if you have got pregnant with a husband who is on tamoxifen , there is no need to be scared as this can be nurtured further as a normal pregnancy with no special risks to the well being of the foetus.
My advise would have been opposite if you would have been on tamoxifen for any breast issues.
So its safe to continue.
Regards
