Does Intake Of Xanax Help In Treating Anxiety?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: Hello, my name is XXXXXXX and I recently moved to Vegas from XXXXXXX I've been diagnosed with ADD and anxiety many years ago. I was taking Vyvanse and Xanax, but only took them as needed for work/school. I'm currently having a really difficult time trying to find a doctor to keep me on the same regimen that has been working for me and honestly, making me feel like an addict. I'm very conservative with medications as I work in the medical field. But I've just gone through a divorce, moved cross country and will be starting another new job very soon and need some stability to help me temporarily. Any advice?

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and thanks for your question.

Anxiety is best treated long-term with an SSRI antidepressant or cognitive behavioral therapy. I actually never prescribe Xanax because it is highly addicting, requiring higher and higher doses over time to achieve an effect, and leads to cognitive slowing, memory loss, oversedation, falls, and withdrawal which can lead to seizures and death. Furthermore, ADHD can be treated with different medications other than stimulants, which are known to worsen anxiety considerably. I would be open to doctors' suggestions about alternative regimens in your case.
