Does High BP Lead To Brain Aneurysm?

Posted on Sat, 19 Jul 2014
Question: Hi.

I'm a 34 year old who (just this year as far as I know...longest it could have been going on was maybe two years I would think) had some prehypertensive readings (many over 120/80 but below 140/90, and a few across the border of hypertensive, though not many...usually it was the diastolic that was over 90 - systolic rarely hit 140 [happened once or twice during a panic attack]). Through lifestyle modifications (moderating alcohol, regular exercise, trying to eat healthier) as well as supplements (2g fish oil, garlic, CoQ10, grape seed extract, celery seed extract, apple cider vinegar, a bit of cayenne and ginger, possibly adding mushroom complex [reishi, shiitake, maitake]), I've gotten that down to a generally healthy level (and sometimes below 120/80...with the average falling at or below that usually...occasionally a point or two above but not much).

Anxiety also came into play, and I suspect my blood pressure may have been slightly lower than my readings, because I always had slight panic when I took it (which I've adjusted to now since I've gotten used to it and it's improved, so I don't generally have panic attack feelings when taking it anymore).

A grandparent died after a brain hemorrhage/aneurysm, and I'm wondering if being prehypertensive/borderline hypertensive for a little bit (up to a couple years, but I think less than that), but now having it under control, could have started an aneurysm or increased my future risk for hemorrhage/aneurysm, or if it's unlikely I caused a problem.

Thanks much for your help!

Brief Answer:
Aneurysm or brain haemorrhage are unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your clinical details.

I am glad to note that you have successfully managed to bring down your blood pressure to good normal levels with non-pharamacological means (diet and exercises).

At these levels of blood pressure, there is no risk of brain haemorrhage.

Also, these BP readings would not increase your chances of having a brain aneurysm.

So, I would request you to stop worrying and lead a happy life.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
