Does Wellbutrin Help In Treating Sore Throat?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: Hello,

I have had a sore throat for about a year now, with every test possible being done. Since this is so chronic and ongoing, I am considering taking an anti-depressant. I have heard that Wellbutrin can help chronic throat issues b/c of an intern-gamma? property, and I have heard that Elavil can as well, due to neuropathy with Gerd.. I have also read that both have side effects of a sore throat. Is this a bad idea to consider these antidepressants? I'm at my wits end!

Brief Answer:
Yes antidepressants can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for choosing HCM for your health related issues

I can understand your concern. You have chronic, persistent sore throat not responding to treatment. All tests came normal. Chronic sore throat with all normal tests and not responding to treatment could occur due to compulsive throat clearing also. I haven't seen you so I can't say this with certainty. If you have habit of repetitive throat clearing then that could be the reason. Repetitive clearing result in irritation in throat and thus cause foreign body sensation. This sensation compels individual to clear throat again and thus irritation increases further. With time chronic sore throat like condition ensues.

If that is your situation then yes antidepressants can help. Both Wellbutrin or Elavil if used in high doses are known to increase sore throat (in some case reports) but that is not usually seen in clinical practice. Antidepressants along with soothing agent can help to calm you and will help to reduce the throat irritation. If you are not seeing any response with conventional treatment then its time to consult a psychiatrist for help.

Thanks. Take care. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Brief Answer:
Bupropion would be better choice.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

In my opinion its better to start with Bupropion (Wellbutrin). The starting dose should be 150 mg and can be increased to 300 mg per day. The drug will help to control your symptoms. Please take the drugs after consulting a psychiatrist only and with prescription only.

Thanks.
