Does Remeron Interact With Abilify?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Apr 2017
Question: Hello, my name is XXXX XXXXXXX and I take 15 mg of abilify in the morning, 1 mg of klonopin three times a day, and used to take 45 mg of remeron at night. The reason I stopped the remeron is because two hours after I took it, I had burning all over my body. I read that the combination of abilify and remeron can cause burning skin. Here is the article where it says that: http://www.ehealthme.com/ds/mirtazapine/skin%20burning%20sensation/
As it says in the article, 12 of the 44 people who had burning skin with remeron were taking abilify. So is it safe for me to continue taking remeron with abilify even though I had this burning skin. And a pharmacist told me once that abilify increases the effect of remeron. So do you think I will have too much of the effect of remeron in my system. Please tell me if you think it is okay to take remeron and abilify together even though I had this burning skin sensation, and if I will have too much of the effect of remeron in my system from the abilify.

It also says in the article that the people who experienced burning sensation when taking abilify and remeron together also had other side effects such as heart palpitations, confusional state, etc. So are these medications safe to take together?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

These medications are safe to be taken together. I would resume taking the Remeron, but I would take it at a lower dose, 30mg, and see if you still have the burning sensation. If you do, I would at that point stop taking the Remeron and consider using a different medication, such as Trazodone.

Hello, my name is XXXX XXXXXXX and I take 15 mg of abilify in the morning, and 1 mg of abilify three times a day. I have trouble sleeping at night, and melatonin and remeron gave me burning skin sensation. It was very painful. So I was wondering what other sleep medications can be taken with abilify and klonopin? What about gaba, l-tryptophan, L-theanine, St. John's wort, valerian root? Which of these can be safely taken with abilify and klonopin and do they have melatonin in them because I can't take that? And what dosage should I take of the one or ones you think are safe?

I meant I take 1 mg of klonopin three times a day.

Welcome back,

Over the counter supplements are not a good idea, as they are unregulated and contain any number of chemicals. A better option is the prescription medication Trazodone. I would talk to your doctor about considering this.
