Question: I would like to know if the hormone replacement therapy drug Ogen can cause heart flutters. I was off of it for 6 months and had no heart fluttering. I have been back on it for 4 days now and today started having the fluttering again.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to Health Care Magic, Thanks for writing to us,

I am Dr.Muhammad Ahmad, I have read your question, I understand your concern and will try to help you in the best possible way.

Yes this is true , Hormone replacement therapy can cause palpitation specially in your case when are taking thyroxin as well which is also well known to cause increased heart beat (tachycardia) and flutter or fibrillation too.

Here are a few suggestions you can work on:

1) When ever you get this feeling please get to ER and get your ECG done and let the dr see if it's flutter in literal meaning or just palpitation.
2) If this comes in episodes , you can discuss with your cardiologist about getting your Holter's done which will give a record of 24 hours of heart activity and abnormal activity can be seen and diagnosis gets easy.
3) There are certain drugs which can control heart rate though you are already taking Caduet which controls heart rate but still you can discuss with your cardiologist if he thinks there can be other options.
4) Hormone replacement therapy is indeed a must , but you can discuss with your doctor about adjustment in thyroxin dose of he thinks that it can be done without added risks.
5) Here your doctors will have to fine a way to balance these meds.
6) I would also mention here that get a diagnosis of this feeling if it is atrial fibrillation, palpitation, PVC, or flutter then proper medication and treatment strategy can be advised. Atrial fibrillation does feel to the patient as flutter but it is not life threatening as such it just irritates the patient with strange heart beat and butterflies in stomach . So in that case if rate is in control you might well have to learn living with this.

This does not seem to be life threatening but I would suggest you to have a detailed discussion specially with your cardiologist. Ask him if he would suggest a rate limiting drug like beta blocker or calcium channel blocker to limit your heart rate or would he suggest any tests echo, Holters or any thing.

I Hope this answers your question, if your have more queries feel free to ask, otherwise close the discussion and rate it. Wish you the best of health.

Regards,

Dr.Muhammad Ahmad.
