Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2016
Question: I am trying to care for an 85 year old lady that takes two meds{donepezil HCL and sotalol HCL} plus Namenda XR HCI. What does the HCL and HCI stand for? I was concerned that they might cause her to get dehydrated.

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

HCl stands for hydrochloride. This is a molecule that promotes absorption of a medication in the body. It has no effect whatsoever on hydration in the body. It is perfectly safe!

But please ensure that she remains well hydrated , i.e. encourage oral take of water/juice/soup.
