Does Bupivacaine Help Control Abdominal Pain Caused By Endometriosis?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: My daughter- who has a pump implanted for pain control of endometreosis - recently had bupivacaine added due to back pain. She stands on her feet for 10-12 hours and does heavy lifting. I cannot remember if she is on morphine or dilaudid. She is 41. Is there a valid reason to have this drug added to prevent pain? Is there a consequence to its long time use?

Brief Answer:
Bupivacaine will help in better pain control

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for asking from HCM for your health related doubts

I can understand your concern. She is on implanted pump (Morphine or Dilaudid) for control of pain. Morphine or Dilaudid are opioid drugs and have strong analgesic action. These drugs control pain by acting on opioid receptors.

In contrast Bupivacaine acts on different receptors and the drug is an anaesthetic drug. The drug controls pain by anaesthetic action. The drug is commonly used with Morphine pumps to reduce the dose of morphine or opioid. The drug supplements the pain controlling effects.

There are not very serious consequences in long term use. Since opioid dependence is a serious concern so in my opinion adding Bupivacaine will help in better pain control at relatively small doses.

Thanks, I hope this helps. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Is there a reason a psychiatrist answered my question? I am a nurse so I an aware of your medical background, but do not know how up to date you are on pain management.
