Does Atacand Increases The Chances Of Fracture?
Question: Blood pressure has been well controlled for years. I have osteoporosis (DEXA & QCT) and have heard that Atacand increases hip fracture. True? Would you continue taking this med or would you suggest starting another HBP med?

Osteoporosis if managed well on medications (biophosphonates, vitamin D, calcium), diet, removal of cause such as hormone deficiency or androgen deficiency due to other diseases such as prostate etc and hormone substitution is well taken care of-and if dexa score comes to normal then chances for hip fracture may be remote after atacand. As I have studied, fractures have occurred with uncorrected osteoporosis and already deficient hip in calcium and minerals.
You may talk to your physician and consult an orthopedic doctor, have a recent x ray of hip ad after examining the hip ortho doctor may advise for if any risk is there or else- manage osteoporosis and evaluate with dexa T score, if in limits no need for change of atacand unless the two doctors draw a scientific evaluation and consensus
