Does 2 Lines On The HPT Mean A Positive Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

Hope you remember me. I have been regularly posting queries to you.

My last period was on 8th Feb.We have been trying to plan a family. I did not get my periods until today hence I took a home pregnancy test.
The second line in the HPT was light pink in color. I took another one and the result was same. Two lines mean positive.

What do you suggest I do next? I have called for a Thyroid profile and Beta HCG blood test tomorrow morning
I am yet to find a gynacelogist in XXXXXXX since we have recently shifted here.
I am a little nervous since last year I had a miscarraige due to my high levels of TSH. I remember my HCG was very low at that time and not growing as expected.

Just wanted to share this news with you and take your opinion in general.
Any thing to be avoided or any particular precautions to be followed
Regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
go for an early foetal ultrasound scan

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Nice to hear from you again.

Yes, 2 lines on the HPT means a positive pregnancy. You are right in asking for Thyroid profile and Beta HCG test again now. Please go ahead with the same.

I would also suggest you to go for an early foetal ultrasound scan of the uterus to date the pregnancy and to rule out ectopic pregnancy. You can make an appointment for the same as well.

I am sorry I am not aware of any Gynecologists in Gurgoan. There is no need to be nervous, take it in a good way and go for the tests.

Meanwhile continue to take Folic acid supplementation and eltroxin as well. Avoid taking any unnecessary medications.

Eat healthy and drink plenty of fluids orally. Take adequate rest as well. There are no specific precautions to be followed. You can do light exercises and walking.

Let me know the ultrasound scan report and other test reports to discuss further.

Take care!

Hi Doc,

Is there any specific reason that you doubt an ectopic pregnancy or is this always done for precaution?

I have taken reference from my friends. I shall visit the gynacelogist as soon I get the Thyroid and Beta HCG reports

Regards, XXXXXXX

Also what is the process for a feotal ultrasound? Is it like the normal ultrasound or any different?

Answered by Dr. Shanthi E (33 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
just being precautious

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I was just being precautious about ectopic pregnancy; there is no specific reason for the same. Every pregnancy needs an early foetal ultrasound to make sure that the pregnancy is within the uterus and is not ectopic. So, this is the general rule that all pregnancies will need early scan.

The process for a early foetal ultrasound is same as any other normal ultrasound. Just drink around 2 big glasses of water one hour before the scan.

Regards,

Hi Doc,

some more follow up questions while I await for the blood test reports:
Btw, I had eaten my thyroid medicine before the guy came for test:( Will that lead to inaccuracy?

I normally travel to work in an auto. The road to office is fine as such. Should I start taking a cab or going by car, or am I being too cautious?

We had planned a Kausani nanital trip in April first week. It includes a train journey plus road travel on mountains. Am I still okay to take that?

Caution: I might just bug you with my doubts all through this journey! I am so glad I have someone to talk to:)

Brief Answer:
no, it would not lead to inaccuracy

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Since you are on thyroid medication for some time now, the test taken after taking the thyroid medicine would conclude on how your thyroid levels are with the regular usage of tablet. So, it would not lead to inaccuracy. In fact, it would show us how your thyroid hormone levels are maintained with the medication. Hence, you need not worry about taking the medicine beforehand.

If the road to your office is smooth, you can continue to travel by auto. I do not see any problem with it.

Regarding the travel to Kausani nanital trip, I would suggest not to travel on roads that are on mountains and hills.

I would like to look at the early foetal ultrasound scan report before suggesting you anything conclusively. So, please let me know about the same when it is done.

Pregnancy is a wonderful journey; you can talk to me anytime about all your doubts. I would be more than happy to help you.

Regards,

Hi Doctor,

I am attaching the thyroid and Beta HCG report in the meantime, please have a look

One more thing, you had suggested me to use the ovulation strips for better chances of planning. I remember it came positive on 1st March.

Regards, XXXXXXX

Hi Doc,

Another question, do I still need to continue with Oosure.

Regards, XXXXXXX
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shanthi E (13 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Beta HCG is positive for pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have gone through the uploaded reports. Beta HCG is positive for pregnancy. Congratulations on that. Your thyroid profile is within normal limits as well. So, continue to take the same Eltroxin 137.5 daily.

Yes, it is most likely that you ovulated on 1 March. The value of Beta HCG at 394 also suggests the same that it is early pregnancy.

You need not continue to take Oosure but make sure that you take Folic acid 5mg daily at night. I usually prescribe my patients tablet folvite 5mg. You can discuss with your doctor about the same.

I would be more interested to have a look at the early foetal ultrasound scan. Let me know when it is done.

Regards,

Hi Doctor,

Good morning.

I went to the gynec last evening. She said it is too early for an ultrasound and we should get another Beta HCG done on Thursday(within 48 hours of the previous one)

She said the level of next Beta HCG on Thursday should atleast be 800, so we know this is progressing properly.

I had told her my entire history of last year and took the reports along

She has prescribed the below meds
1. L-folinine instead of the original Macfolate that I take (once a day)
2. Tab ecosprin -75 (bedtime)
3. Hucog 2000 injection on tuesday and friday
4. Cap susten 400 (vaginal insertion bedtime)
5. Duphaston 10 (once a day)
6. Argin scachet once a day

She has asked me to discountinue any of the skin creams that I used except for clindyogus gel (sorry I cant read this clearly from her prescription)

She has also asked me to visit an endocrinologist today

Regards, XXXXXXX
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shanthi E (4 hours later)
Brief Answer:
You can wait for the ultrasound scan

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Yes, I agree. Your Gynec is right. You can wait for the ultrasound scan for a few days more. Yes, please get the Beta HCG done as suggested by the doctor. The levels of HCG may vary in individual pregnancies. If it is at 800, it is good. Let us wait and see.

You can take all the medicines prescribed to you by the doctor. L-folinine has folic acid 5mg. So you can take that as well instead of Folvite and Macfolate.

Rest of all the medicines are going to help the pregnancy progress and helps the baby grow. Hence, continue taking them.

You can go for the endocrinologist consultation.

I would suggest that you remain under the care of your Gynec throughout your pregnancy and follow her suggestions.

With regards to your doubts in any case, we can always discuss here.

Wish you good luck.

Thanks Doctor,

Few more queries:

1. I got a bit worried since she prescribed HUCOG injections. I am hoping the HCG levels are growing as expected
2. Will the first ultrasound be transvaginal or abdominal?
3. I normally fast on Thursdays, as in I have fruits and milk through the day and have regular dinner in evening. Is it okay to continue or should I stop fasting?
4. Please suggest a book on pregnancy

I have friends who look forward to being a mother & are awed by children. I am not so into all this. If age wasn't a factor (I am 32 now), I might have given this a rest for another 5 years. I am too scared of pain too. I hated the HSG test when i had to take it last year. Why I am telling you all this is please tell me how does a person like me handles pregnancy & childbirth? I keep having doubts if I will be able to do all this

As a kid, I remember I would pray that by the time I grew up, men should be bearing children. The prayer hasnt worked:)

Brief Answer:
HUCOG injections are good for you

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I am so glad to hear from you and I like the innocence you portrayed as a child :).

Now, to answer your queries:

1. HCG is growing normally as of now, just wait and watch. HUCOG injections is HCG that will help the pregnancy grow. Do not be worried about it.

2. The first ultrasound can be either transvaginal or transabdominal. Early scans are usually done through transvaginal route. It is the doctor's preference and also the patient's choice. Sometimes, if the findings are not clear on transabdominal route, the sonologist may repeat the scan via the transvaginal route.

3. It is okay to fast as it is just one day in a week.

4. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" written by XXXXXXX Mazel, XXXXXXX Murkof is one book which can help you. I have read it myself too.
XXXXXXX pregnancy is all about patience, endurance and experience. One has to go through to feel it. I am glad you have a chance to be that.

Let me tell you one honest fact, pregnancy needs a lot and lot of patience from the mother's end. You should keep it till the last day.

I am sure you would definitely be able to do all of this.

My prayers are with you!

Hi Doc, just met the endocronologist. She said that my TSH has been less than 1 for quite sometime And a dosage of 137.5 might just be more for me. She has changed it to 125 now and asked me to check again in 3 weeks

Answered by Dr. Shanthi E (15 hours later)
Brief Answer:
yes, 125 is fine

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks Doc,

I messaged my gynec from XXXXXXX about this and she asked me to stick to the dosage for 12 weeks & later reduce if needed.

I got confused about whom to follow but I shall stick with the endocrinologist advice. Instead of waiting for 3 weeks for the next test, I might get one done in 2 weeks to be careful.

one more thing, yesterday the nurse checked by BP, it was 90/60. I know this is low but the endocrinologist did not say anything. I hope there is nothing to worry here.

This morning after the blood test, I felt dizzy and fell back on the chair. I had some water and took some rest and I was fine again. It may be due to the empty stomach blood test but I never experienced this before.

Brief Answer:
stick to the endocrinologist advice

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

It is better to stick to the endocrinologist's advice. Also, reducing from 137.5 to 125 is just a small decrease. So, do not worry about it.

Your BP at 90/60 is normal. It is not low. You need not worry about it.

The morning incident is just a one time occurrence. It could be because of the empty stomach. You can safely ignore it.
