Question: I have asthma, but I'm debabting if I have bronchitis because within the past month, every time I breathe in hard, I want to cough. At night especially I have lung pain sometimes and have difficulty breathing. It feels allergy induced, but I'n not sure. I'm also a runner.

Brief Answer:
Long standing asthma can cause bronchitis.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Long standing asthma can cause bronchitis.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) with reversibility testing.
If reversibility is absent than possibility of bronchitis is more.
It will also tell you about severity of the disease and treatment of bronchitis is based on severity only.
So PFT will also guide you about treatment.
Please let me know
1. Since how many years you are having asthma?
2. Which drugs you are taking for asthma?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Uncontrolled heart burn can cause worsening of asthma.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Heartburn is risk factor for asthma.
And uncontrolled heart burn can cause worsening of asthma.
Heart burn causes reflux and aspiration.
This aspiration causes inflammation in airways and hence mucus production and bronchospasm.
So control of Heartburn is must for control of asthma.
So start proton pump inhibitors and prokinetic drugs.
Avoid stress and tension. Avoid hot and spicy food. Avoid junk food. Avoid large meals, instead take frequent small meals.
Don't worry, you will be alright.
Hope I have solved your query.
